Trim panels, carpets and in some cases a seat cover come away before the battery can be lifted out, and the vent hose has to go back on so gases are routed out of the cabin.

In the boot, under the floor on the passenger side. There are jump-start terminals under the bonnet, which is how most people jump the car without ever seeing the battery itself.
Under the floor in front of the passenger seat. The carpet and a cover lift to reach it, and the vent hose must be refitted afterwards.
If you see dim lights, slow starts or warning lights, or the battery is over 4 years old, it is time to test and probably replace it.
At least once a year, and before every summer once it is more than two years old. A test takes a few minutes through the jump-start terminals, so nothing has to be dismantled just to check it.
Typically 3 to 5 years, with driving habits and the heat the car soaks up deciding where it lands. A summer spent outdoors, or a diet of short hops, pulls it towards the shorter figure.
