Charging System Repair

Car Alternator and Dynamo Repair in Dubai, Where You Park

Dimming lights, a charging warning or a battery that keeps dying usually point to the charging system rather than the battery. We test it where the car is parked, from AED 50, and most repairs are finished within 30–60 minutes of arrival, covered by a 6–12 month warranty on parts and labour. No tow to a workshop is needed.

What the Alternator Does, and Why It Is Called a Dynamo

Driven by the engine's auxiliary belt, the alternator powers everything electrical once the engine runs and recharges the battery that started it. A built-in regulator holds its output at roughly 13.5–14.7V.

In the UAE it is often called a dynamo. Strictly, a dynamo is the older DC generator cars used until the early 1970s; today's cars have alternators. Both do the same job, and we work on either.

A worn charging unit is among the usual reasons a brand-new battery dies again within weeks, so the charging system is checked before any car battery replacement is suggested.

Symptoms of a Charging Fault

Charging faults usually show up in the electrics before the car stops. Look for:

  • A battery or charging warning light on the dashboard
  • Headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev
  • A battery that keeps going flat, even a new one
  • Windows, wipers or the screen behaving erratically
  • A whine that rises with engine speed, or grinding from the belt area
  • A squeal at start-up or with the AC on, pointing to a slipping belt

Any one sign can have another cause. The test tells them apart, and it takes minutes.

Car Alternator Repair Work We Do in Dubai

On-site charging system test
01

On-site charging system test

We measure resting voltage, charging voltage at idle and higher revs, and output with the lights, AC and demister on. A ripple test checks the diodes, which can fail and drain the battery overnight.

Repair or replace
02

Repair or replace

Brushes, the regulator and bearings are the usual wear parts, and replacing them often costs less than a new unit. A failed stator or rectifier makes a replacement better value. You get both prices first.

Belt, tensioner and wiring
03

Belt, tensioner and wiring

A worn belt or weak tensioner slips under load and undercharges with nothing wrong inside the unit itself. We check the belt, tensioner, pulley and the main charging and earth cables.

Battery tested alongside
04

Battery tested alongside

Months of undercharging damage a battery. We test it on the same visit, because a repaired charging system feeding a failed battery still leaves you stranded.

Luxury, stop-start and hybrid cars

Many BMW and Mercedes-Benz models use smart charging that varies the voltage by design, so they are tested against their own targets. Hybrids and EVs have no alternator: a DC-DC converter charges the 12V battery, and we test that instead.

How to Make the Charging System Last

  • Replace the auxiliary belt at the interval in your service schedule
  • Fix oil and coolant leaks; fluid dripping onto the unit shortens its life
  • Replace a weak battery promptly, since charging a failing one overworks the charging system
  • Keep battery terminals and earth straps clean and tight

FAQ

Your alternator & dynamo repair questions

Only a short way. The car runs on the battery alone, and when that drains the engine and electrics stop. Have it tested before a long drive.

Most repairs take 30–60 minutes on-site after diagnosis; a part that must be sourced for a rarer car takes longer, and you are told first.

We repair where it makes sense: brushes, regulators and bearings. A failed stator or rectifier usually makes replacement the better value. You get both prices.

Between 6 and 12 months on parts and labour, depending on the repair.

No. A DC-DC converter charges their 12V battery from the main pack, and that is what we test.

In everyday UAE usage, yes. A dynamo is technically the older DC generator; modern cars use alternators. We work on both.

Usually because it is not being charged properly, or something drains it while the car is parked. We test the alternator's output and check for a drain with the car switched off.
