On models such as the XC90, XC60 and S90, the start battery does the heavy work of cranking the engine and powering the car while it is parked. The support battery backs up the electrical system during start-stop so the screens, lights and safety systems do not dip. They age differently, and a warning about one says little about the other. Without a test of each, a healthy battery can easily be replaced by mistake.
Recharge plug-in hybrids and the mild-hybrid B-badged engines add higher-voltage systems, but none of them powers up without a healthy 12-volt battery. That side is replaced on site, while the high-voltage parts remain the dealer's. Older, simpler models such as the V40 and S60 take a single battery.

Generally about 3–5 years, with driving style and conditions shifting that. The support battery frequently ages at its own pace, apart from the start battery, so one can be tired while the other still tests strong.
Most battery replacements take around 30 minutes. A start battery under the boot floor can take a little longer, because the floor and covers have to come out.
