Either way, the technician brings the size your model calls for, fits it on the spot and sets the terminals, clamps and vent properly.
Before a new unit is suggested, the old one is put under load on our tester, and alternator voltage is noted at idle. If the fault is a loose earth or a failing alternator, you hear that first. Each replacement is covered by a warranty; the worn unit rides back in the van to be recycled.

Sizing the Unit to Your Model
Size, terminal layout and technology all depend on the car, so the technician checks the fitment before a unit comes off the van. This is roughly how the choice falls by type. Saloons and hatchbacks:
